March 9th - 7:50-8:40am
All students will be flying kites during their PE class on March 7th (B Day), 8th (C Day) or 9th (A Day)!
Parents are invited to come and fly kites with their child, but are asked not to bring younger siblings! Please park in front of the school (in designated parking spaces) or at Riverbend (not by the field in order to reduce traffic). You can meet your child out on the field, we will bring them outside after some brief instructions. Please take your child’s kite home with you after we are done flying!
Kites have been purchased by the Booster Club for every student! Kites will be distributed to your child’s class before their Kite Day. Students will use these kites only, please do not bring other kites from home! The teachers (along with their classroom buddies for the younger grades) will help put together the kites. They will be ready to go for kite day!
We hope that the weather cooperates, but if kite flying is not possible during a class we will play games in the gym instead. Please do not call the office to see if kite day has been cancelled! Kite days will not be rescheduled.
You can get ready for kite flying by attending the Zilker Kite Festival on Sunday, March 4th. For more information go to https://www.abckitefestival.org/
Students may only attend the kite day for their PE class. Please do not ask to participate with another group due to your child's absence on their assigned kite day. Look at the schedule below for your child’s Kite Day!
Looking forward to some high flying FUN!!! Hope to see you during Kite Days! For more information please contact the PE department.
Let’s go Fly a kite!
Valentine's Day Party
It’s time to celebrate! Our Valentine’s Day party is scheduled for Wednesday, February 14th from 2:00-2:40pm in our classroom, 312. The parent volunteers are putting together an ice cream sundae party, and we will also be exchanging valentines that afternoon. You are welcome to join us!
- Students are encouraged to bring in valentines to exchange with their homeroom classmates. Please note that if your child chooses to bring in valentines, s/he must write one for all students in our homeroom, not just a select few. I will be emailing a list of the students in our homeroom class for your child to reference.
- We will create bag receptacles at school, so there is no need to bring in additional materials for collection.
- During school hours, valentines only be exchanged with homeroom classmates. Should your child wish to exchange with other students outside of his/her homeroom, s/he can do so outside of the school day.
Looking forward to it!
Our new dismissal system goes LIVE on February 14. EVERY CHILD must enroll for this system, not just bus riders!
Sign up on the Parent Portal:
- CHECK YOUR CHILD'S DEFAULT SETTING for accuracy (the way your child typically goes home).
- If your default is incorrect, please email Amanda Downey.
- Beginning February 14, homeroom teachers will ONLY use the new Campus Dismissal Manager (CDM) system to manage how students go home. We will no longer be permitted to honor emails or phone calls to the office.
Thank you in advance for signing up as soon as possible!
Please see below for the information from my recent email regarding upcoming field trips. As always, please email me with any questions or concerns.
We have 3 Spring semester field trips scheduled for 5th grade:
- HCMS Visit - Wednesday, January 31st
* All students are expected to attend.
- LBJ Library and Pollyanna Theater – Thursday, February 15th
* Students must bring a completely disposable lunch. No backpacks
* We need 8 chaperones – first come, first serve!
- Main Event- May 9th
One payment of $35 can be made to cover all 3 trips on Skyward Family Access by Friday, February 9th.
Our fifth graders will take a short field trip to Hill Country Middle School on Wednesday, January 31st from 9:00 to 10:45ish a.m. We will join fifth graders from Cedar Creek and Eanes Elementary to get a peek at some of the fun things that will happen next year at HCMS.
Note: You do not need to do ANYTHING for this field trip. This information is intended to help you with scheduling purposes only.
In addition, on February 14th, the HCMS counselors will visit us in our homerooms at BPE to help the students begin scheduling their HCMS Fine Arts selection (choir, band, and orchestra). You and your child will also choose which level of language arts class s/he will take next year (6th grade or Pre-AP 6th). The attached checklist is a useful tool when determining the best fit for your child. Actual leveled math course selections happen later on in the school year. Your teachers will be in touch with you late in the school year to determine placement in math.
Note: I am aware that there are children planning to attend schools other than HCMS next year. We still plan for these kids to attend the field trip and schedule electives that will be effective until they are officially withdrawn from EISD at the end of the school year.
LBJ LIBRARY & POLLYANNA THEATER
Our next field trip is scheduled for Thursday, February 15th at the LBJ Presidential Library. The students will enjoy Liberty, Equality and Fireworks, a play performed by the Pollyanna Theater Group. Set in a history museum, the play’s characters (a group of elementary students) experience key elements of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s when iconic images from this important time period come to life and begin to move and speak. We will also get to tour the museum at the library. The cost for this field trip is to be paid online using Skyward Family Access.
On the day of the trip, students should arrive to school at the normal time with a completely disposable sack lunch. No backpacks are needed this day. We will load the school buses at approximately 9:45 and return before the regular school day dismissal time.
We would love to invite 8 parents to chaperone and to assist with transporting the student lunches to the LBJ Library. Please email your homeroom teacher if you are interested in helping out. We’ll take the first 8 volunteers for each homeroom. Cost per chaperone is $4; please send in cash once you receive confirmation from your homeroom teacher. Chaperones will not pay for their entry through Skyward Family Access but instead send $4 cash into homeroom teacher.
Please proceed to Skyward Family Access when you are able to pay your $35 fee for all 3 of these field trips. Do not hesitate to connect with your homeroom teacher or the counselors for any scholarship needs. Please plan to pay your fee by Friday, February 9th.

In the afternoon, we will attend The African Children’s Choir at 1:45 in the cafeteria. All parents are welcome to join us at the performance as well. If you would like your child to be dismissed early at the end of the performance at 2:30pm, please make sure your child checks out with me first! Due to the snow day on Friday, our Nutcracker field trip at Westlake High School has been moved to tomorrow, Monday, December 11th.We are so thrilled that we'll still be able to attend the performance! Students should go to assembly and specials in the morning prior to the performance, and fitness/recess/lunch will run at the normal time.
Walk Two Moons
This year, we will be reading and annotating two books in Language Arts including Walk Two Moons, and Maniac Magee. It is helpful for the students to annotate what they are reading in their own personal copy, so if you are able, please purchase a copy of our first book for the year, Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, by Monday, September 18. Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Half-Price books are all great places to look. Here is a link to the book on Amazon: Walk Two Moons, Sharon Creech
If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out!
Just Right Books
Starting this week, the students will be required to read 20 minutes of their "Just Right Book" (JRB) every Monday-Thursday night. Just like the story of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," a JRB is a book that is not too easy, not too hard, but JUST RIGHT! Students can determine if a book is just right by using the "Five Finger Rule," a strategy we've discussed in class. The figure below outlines this strategy.
A JRB can include newspaper articles, online articles, non-fiction, short stories, magazines, reading on a kindle, etc. As much as I love them, I ask that students save their graphic novels for after they complete their 20 minutes of JRB reading. Just like runners have to slowly increase their speed in order to achieve a faster lap around the track, readers benefit from challenging themselves a bit more each time they pick up a book. While graphic novels are incredibly enjoyable and entertaining, they don't always include the story elements that help readers grow, and I want to make sure we are all growing together!
